On February 6, 11-year-old Daniel Yuval from Tel Aviv was playing in the fresh snow in the Golan Heights when he stepped on landmine and lost his leg. His 12 year-old sister also sustained shrapnel injuries.

The incident has prompted many in Israel and around the world to ask not only whether the minefield was properly fenced, but why hundreds of thousands of mines are buried there in the first place.

Halemeh was growing up in Balka Al–qour, a rural area of Jordan, when at the age of nine she broke her foot. The traditional remedies available in her village were not enough to prevent infection, and gangrene soon set in. By the time Halemeh got medical treatment three months later, her leg could not be saved. She underwent amputation surgery and spent a month in recovery.
